Business and operations

Is a business an asset if it always needs you?

My thinking about this has been changing.

By Vilbert Gústafsson

For a long time, I have thought about businesses in terms of revenue, profit and value.

But what if the business stops working the moment its owner goes on holiday?

What kind of asset is it then?

Perhaps it is simply a very well-paid job that the person owns.

There is nothing necessarily wrong with that.

But it is something different.

I have become more interested in things that keep creating value without my having to stand at the machine myself.

Systems.

People.

Processes.

Intellectual property.

Assets.

Income streams.

Perhaps the shift from working hard to owning more does not happen primarily when your income rises.

Perhaps it happens when you start asking:

What am I doing today that can keep creating value when I am not there?
