Life and values

You do not have to finish your old life before starting a new one

More than once, I have found myself between what I have been doing and what I want to do next.

By Vilbert Gústafsson

At times, that has brought a strange feeling that I must first put everything from the old life completely in order.

Finish the projects. Tie up every loose end. Meet every expectation. Answer every question.

Only then am I allowed to begin something new.

But life does not seem to work that way.

Some things do not end. Some simply continue on a smaller scale. Some can survive without taking all our time. And some just need to be allowed to fade away.

Perhaps our idea of what it means to change direction is sometimes too narrow.

It does not always have to be a grand, dramatic decision in which you burn the bridge behind you.

Sometimes the change is much quieter.

You simply decide what gets your best time, energy and attention now.

The old life does not have to have been wrong.

Nor does it have to be finished.

Perhaps it is simply time for something else.
